Today, more than ever before, we must be aware of man’s plans to ensnare us. We cannot even answer our phones without being alert to potential scams. My son works in cyber-security. He experiences first-hand the advanced ways that the world uses to trap and take advantage of the unsuspecting.
I recently experienced this when I went to the dentist based on a flier that I had received several times in the mail. It offered a fixed price for new patients that included cleaning, x-ray and consultation. I had just experienced a major dental incident where a certain section of my gums started bleeding, became swollen and was so painful that I could not even use the water-pick on it. (I must admit that the Lord had previously warned me in my spirit about this dentist). I knew that I was overdue for a cleaning. Feeling desperate, I called his office and was given an appointment for just a couple of days later.
When I showed up for the appointment, I confirmed with the front desk that I would be getting a cleaning that day. She assured me that I would and stated depending on the type of cleaning needed there may be a price increase. I told her I was willing to pay it. After a lengthy and somewhat painful x-ray process, I realized the tech seemed to be steering me away from a cleaning. I decided to explain my situation to the dentist, who she told me had the final say. I shared all that had happened to bring me to his office. He talked about doing an extraction (the x-ray did not show any cavities), fixing my bridge, and getting implants. I reminded him of the purpose of my visit. He asked me if I had the flyer (I did). He told me the cleaning would cost more; I said I would pay the difference. He then realized that I was only interested in getting the promised cleaning, at that time.
He said that I needed to trust him and because I didn’t, maybe we were not a good match. I told him I thought he was on to something. I took my flyer, paid the front desk for the service rendered and left. I encourage you not to lay aside what you know to be true just because someone tells you that it isn’t true.
We have to be sober and vigilant because our adversary the devil walks about seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). God has given us wisdom and common sense. If something does not make sense to you, ask questions. Do not surrender your ability to make decisions for yourself. The only man we should trust without question is Jesus Christ. There are doctors and dentists who put the wellbeing of their patients before financial gain. Not all are like that. Even then, they are capable of making mistakes. The best way to live is to be led by the Holy Spirit.
