Mathew 11:28-30 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
The true rest is found when we come to Jesus and let Him help us with our daily lives. We will no longer have to go it alone. The first step in this process is recognizing that we need His help. Many times, we have the attitude that we must do things on our own. Yet, I have found that the Lord is willing and able to help us with the small and “big” things. For instance, I seldom cook with a recipe. I pray and ask the Lord to help me whenever I cook. I have come up with my own recipes. Many people believe that I am a fantastic cook (especially my children 😊). However, if I do not pray, I am prone to making mistakes. I may burn something or leave an ingredient out. Every Christmas, I make fruit cakes. No, not the dried, somewhat unpleasant one many recognize. It is a fruit cake made with wine-soaked fruits that looks and tastes very differently.
My daughter took one in to work and shared it. Now I have people waiting expectantly for my fruit cakes, every Christmas. I did start off with a recipe but found it did not require the fruits to be soaked in the wine first. I pray every time I make this cake. I always feel as if I am in over my head. To date, I have not made a bad cake (or so my kids say 😊).
God delights to help us with the little things. I love to decorate but found that if I pray and ask God to help me, I come up with ideas that I would not normally have. I use colors that I would not normally use. We have the Holy Spirit living in us, we need only ask, and He will help us. When we ask the Holy Spirit to help us, we can operate at a superior level.
When I was a little girl, I did not learn to clean a house properly. My mother worked at home. She had someone to help her clean and so I was not required to. Housework, cleaning is not my best talent 😊 I remember on one occasion, I told the Lord that I wanted to give my house to Him, and I would just clean it for Him. To my surprise the Lord said, no. I asked why…He said because you are “terrible” at it. I was shocked. Did He really say “terrible”? He did…I know because it is a fact. When I pray, I am better at it, but it is not my calling 😊.
We do not have to say formal prayers on our knees to communicate with God. We can pray and talk to Him all through the day. He is always with us. We can choose to go without enlisting His help or we can ask for His help. I sometimes read ads for people wanting work and it will say…”no job too small or too big”. This is what the Holy Spirit says to us…I will help you with the small things and with the ones that, to you, are big. We can face each day knowing that we are not alone, we have a Helper.
