We read in the bible how Adam and Eve succumbed to the devil’s temptation. He first tempted Eve by lying about God’s intentions. He told her that God didn’t want her to eat of the forbidden fruit because He had an ulterior motive. He told her that God was trying to keep her from being all that she could be. The fruit itself was desirable in appearance so she gave in to the temptation and ate it.
Adam, on the other hand, had spent more time with God than Eve. Adam had an opportunity to know God better and to know that God loved and cared for Him. Eve was misled, but Adam deliberately disobeyed. He then tried to put the blame on Eve and God. Telling God “The woman you gave me” caused me to sin.
Jesus is called the second Adam. 1 Corinthians 15: 45 – 46: “And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. However the spiritual is not first but the natural and after that the spiritual.”
Jesus was also tempted by the devil after He was baptized by John. He fasted 40 days and 40 nights and was hungry. The devil told Him if He was indeed the Son of God, He should command that the stones be made bread. Jesus told Him “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Jesus was giving the response that Adam should have given to the temptation. He was saying whatever God says, I believe.
Jesus passed the test when tempted by the devil. He used the true interpretation of the word of God to contradict the devil’s twisted interpretation. This occurred at the beginning of Christ’s ministry. He showed Himself qualified to be the chosen Savior of the world. By Christ’s obedience to God, even unto death, we have a way back into a relationship with the Father.
We need only confess that we are sinners in need of redemption. When we confess our sins and ask Jesus into our hearts, we are forgiven and are clothed in the righteousness of Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:49: “And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.”
