We read in the bible that Adam and Eve were not allowed to eat of the tree of life after they disobeyed God (Genesis 3:23). There was only one thing that they were not allowed to do. Only one sin that they could have committed. Sin is disobeying the revealed will of God.
Adam when he said “the woman who you gave me” (Genesis 3:12) was really trying to blame both Eve and God for what he did. He was trying to say…God if you had not given me this woman I would not have sinned. God wasn’t buying it. We are ultimately responsible for the things we do. There was a very famous sitcom with Flip Wilson where he would always say, “the devil made me do it”.
There is no place in the scriptures where we read that Adam repented. Eve was deceived by the devil but Adam knowingly disobeyed God. It is always easier to blame others for our actions. We could be 60 years old and still blame our parents for our upbringing that we claim caused us to be the way we are. True, we are impacted by how others treat us, but we have a responsibility to overcome those effects.
The way people respond to circumstances is often determined by their heart. One person who was mistreated as a child may make a conscious decision to never treat their children in the same way. Another individual may treat their children the way they were treated, even though they know it is wrong.
The fact that God did not want Adam and Eve to eat of the tree of life tells me that in their fallen state He did not want them to spend eternity with Him. This is another proof that we must be born again and have our sins forgiven in order to have eternal life. Until we become a new creation through Christ’s work on the cross we remain separated from God and in a fallen state inherited from Adam and Eve.
There is no salvation without the recognition that we are sinners in need of a Savior. Jesus said unless a man is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3) He goes on to say that unless a man is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of God. There is only one way back to a relationship with God and that is through Jesus Christ.
