“Cast not your pearls before swine” (Matthew 7:6). Jesus said, “the poor you have always with you” (Mark 14:7). We cannot eradicate poverty. If it were possible, Jesus would not have made this statement. We have to be led by God in our giving. I have found that there are some persons or organizations that I can give to and see a measurable return on my giving. Since I do not deliberately tithe, it is imperative that I let the Holy Spirit lead me as to when, where and how much to give. Sometimes, He has stopped me from giving.
Casting our pearls before swine is indicating that we can give to someone who does not value what we have done for them. They take no account of the fact that you are sharing something of value with them but rather discount what you have done and in fact turn around and attack you. Someone who does this usually has an envious or jealous heart. The mere fact that you are in a position to help them, makes them resent you. We cannot tell who these individuals are unless and until we observe their behavior. However, the Holy Spirit knows who they are.
I remember when my family had a condo that we wanted to rent out. A woman came to me with a sob story about how much she needed a place to rent. She said she had a physical problem as well and that made it difficult for her to get around. I pulled her credit and it was not impressive. She seemed so in need of help that I decided to let her rent the condo. She never moved in. She put her adult son and his live-in girlfriend in the condo instead. I had rented it furnished. He put the furniture on the porch in the rain and began remodeling; taking down walls, removing cabinets, etc. Once I found out what was happening, I hired an attorney to get them out. God was on our side and fought for us. After we got them out, we put the condo up for sale. I found a buyer quickly. He was a contractor and was not put off by all the needed repairs. We got a fair market price for the condo. However, we also got a valuable lesson. Now, I try to be led not only by my feelings of compassion, but by the Holy Spirit.
Many people when they lose a house to foreclosure will go out of their way to do great damage to the house before the bank takes it from them. Despite the fact that they knew when they took out a mortgage that if they did not pay it, that would be the end result. Their intention is to keep the person who buys it from the bank from getting a good deal. Maybe if they were more charitable God would have kept them from losing the house in the first place.
The bottom line is, you cannot solve all the problems in the world but you can alleviate some of the suffering, as led by the Holy Spirit.
