It is good to go to church. However, you can harm yourself by attending the wrong church. Never attend a church that does not have the bible as the foundation for its teachings. Cults usually discourage the reading and study of the bible. If the congregation reads the bible, they would be able to tell that they are being misled.
Jesus said that in the end time many will come saying I am Christ: Matthew 24:5 “For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.” This scripture also goes on to say that they will perform signs and wonders. Remember when Aaron who was with Moses, threw down his staff and it became a snake. The sorcerers in Pharoah’s court could also make their rods turn into snakes. Aaron’s snake ate the sorcerer’s snakes. (Exodus 7:10-12). The fact that Aaron’s snake ate the sorcerer’s snakes proved that God’s power is superior to any of the dark arts.
I listened to someone teach on tv, recently. The things he said would rob someone of their faith if they followed his teachings. What he was basically saying is that we should expect trouble to come into our lives. Well, if our expectations are set to receive things that are negative, they will surely come. It is much better to expect good things to come into our lives and when “bad” things show up we deal with them in accordance with out faith. I usually turn off preaching that I know does not line up with the bible’s instructions. However, I had to wait a few minutes before being able to do so. I had this negative word in my head. I started reciting all the scriptures that contradict that line of thinking. Such as “ask and you shall receive that your joy might be full” (John 16:24). “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”(Matthew 7:11). These are just some of the scriptures that I brought back to mind.
We who are born again have the Holy Spirit living in us. The Holy Spirit is called the “Teacher”. He is the one who wrote the bible using Holy men of God who spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:20-21). When we pray and ask the Holy Spirit to teach us the bible, He will. There are also so many new translations of the bible that it is no longer confusing because of the old terminology. We have a responsibility to read the bible for ourselves. When we read the words that Jesus spoke, we get a better understanding of who He is and what He wants us to be.
It is easy to be misled today when there are so many voices speaking out. We need to know the truth because it is the truth that sets us free.
